What is actually wet

Why the roof is usually not the problem

Ice dams form when heat lost into the attic melts snow on the upper roof, the meltwater runs to the cold overhang and refreezes, and the resulting ridge of ice ponds water behind it until it finds a way under the covering.

A roof in perfect condition will still do this if the attic is warm. Replacing shingles does not change the mechanism, which is why owners who re-roof after an ice dam often see the same damage the following winter.

The correction, in order

Air sealing the ceiling plane comes first: penetrations around light fixtures, the attic hatch, partition top plates and every plumbing and wiring run. Insulation depth comes second. Ventilation comes third, and adding it before sealing can pull more warm air up from the house.

Exhaust fans that discharge into the attic rather than through the roof are a frequent single cause and worth checking before anything else.

Removing the ice safely

Chipping, hacking or applying heat aggressively at the eave damages roofing and gutters and is dangerous work at height in winter conditions. Steam removal by someone equipped for it is the controlled option.

Removing the ice stops the water. It does not repair what is already wet inside, and it does nothing about next winter.

  1. Stop the immediate water entry
